Here’s the first part of Nicola and Craig’s Wedding photography at The Swan West Malling in Kent. I loved photographing this wedding as it was really similar in style to my own which was only a few weeks previously – a small, intimate affair in one (lovely) venue. Nicola and Craig’s wedding was even more intimate than mine though – less than 20 guests, which made photography a breeze in one way – no rushing around trying to ensure you get shots of as many of the 200 guests as you can, but on the flip side ensuring that you’re creative enough to have some variety through the day. As it was a late November day, it perhaps wasn’t surprising that the weather was fairly horrible. To be honest though I quite enjoy photographing wet weddings – if the bride and groom approach it with the right attitude it can make for some interesting photographs and a great story to tell years later.
The Swan is a beautiful contemporary restaurant in the small village of West Malling in Kent. Originally a 15th Century coaching in, The Swan was refurbished in 2000 and is now an elegant restaurant and wedding ceremony/reception venue. The exposed beams, brickwork, wooden floors and vintage design pieces all go towards providing an elegant wedding venue.
I started the day with Nicola at her mum’s lovely house (having a bright house with light coloured walls helped as the weather was fairly miserable – didn’t dampen any spirits though) photographing the details, makeup and everyone getting ready. After a quick few portraits of the stunning bride, it was time to head over to the Swan to meet Craig and the guests before hovering in the doorway waiting for the bride (and trying not to get soaked!). After Nicola’s arrival I made my way back up to the ceremony room to capture the intimate, emotional ceremony – lots of tears but also lots of laughter as well, especially during the readings!
After the ceremony, the guests enjoyed a drinks reception and then an amazing intimate private dining experience – that’s all to come in part 2!
