When I photograph weddings, I mix bride and groom portraiture and photojournalism. As creative as I am on the day, that time goes in a complete blur so it’s nice to do portrait sessions where you can take your time and use multiple lights and lighting techniques without the pressure of having to return the bride and groom to their reception in 10 minutes!

I love working as a kent boudoir and model photographer for this very reason, plus with changes in location and outfits, it’s like having multiple photoshoots in one session. Here are some of my favourite shots from a recent boudoir shoot in a lovely private house. When the homeowners responded to my request for locations, I don’t think they could quite understand my excitement when finding the ‘secret’ door from the bedroom into the bathroom – I just knew I had to use the black tiled floor and free-standing bath (I also knew it would be cold for the subject!). The bedroom has lovely shutters that can be angled or opened to change the quality of light, fantastic wallpaper, a painted floor plus marble fireplace so just makes for an amazing location.

We started the session with some natural light headshots, then moved into natural light on the bed, then using bounced flash from a panel reflector, through to videolight and a beauty dish. I knew that the final shots in the bathroom would suit a more glamour photography look, hence the partial nudity!

I wanted to make use of the shutters, and the lovely natural light streaming through them, supplementing this with reflector.

And then into the bathroom – I wanted to get as much reflection as I could from the floor. The images are shot with a beauty dish from above camera and supplemented with videolight (to warm slightly) from camera left, above and behind the subject.
